Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins."
(Mark 2:18-22 ESV)
I have heard a talk on fasting before and it really encouraged me to try fasting which is something I had never done. It really strikes me how Jesus says here that now that he is gone we will fast. It is not option or guidance. Jesus states it as a reality a discipline that we would do. God I pray you give me new vision and motivation to fast. I want to do it to humble myself and focus on you in the discipline of fasting.
Jesus you also just break apart the old understanding of religion and I love how you guide us to the true way to follow God through the law and faith.
I pray you continue to break any false theology or understanding I have of you God! Instead teach me by the grace and truth of Christ as revealed by your word and the Spirit.
Thank you Jesus for new understanding!
Amen
